GMC Terrain SLT

2008 GMC Terrain SLT
GM Media Release

2008 GMC Terrain SLTGMC's first ever compact SUV, the all-new Terrain was officially launched in Jordan at a major media Ride & Drive event along the scenic Amman to Dead Sea route. Coming one year after the launch of the widely successful Acadia – GMC's first entry in the crossover segment – the Terrain is the latest in a growing line of professional grade GMC sport utility vehicles offering a stylish and practical package. The all–new Terrain is now available at showrooms of the GMC dealer in Jordan, The Leading Vehicles Company Ltd.

The new Terrain offers five seats and is available with a 2.4-litre engine making 141 hp and 222 Nm of torque or with a 3.2-litre V6 engine making 223 hp and generating 300 Nm of torque to appeal to a wide range of customers. A five-speed automatic transmission is common to both models. Available in two trim levels, SLE and SLT, the Terrain is driven by value, leaving nothing to be desired at any level.

With the Terrain compact SUV, the GMC brand now encompasses an ever expanding line-up offering its professional grade philosophy to younger individuals and small families to experience and enjoy what Arab and large families have enjoyed for decades. There is now a GMC for everyone starting from the Terrain, Acadia, Envoy, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL and Denali models.

2008 GMC Terrain SLTThe Terrain will appeal to a wide range of customers, from established families looking for a more stylish alternative to a sedan to those with an outdoor lifestyle desiring a practical load carrier with good road manners.

Coming in close behind value is striking design and Terrain excels here too. It heralds the introduction of a new-style generation of GMC products for the Middle East and, both inside and out, features design cues that portray strong characteristics.

Examples include the strong 'face' of the brand incorporating a prominent GMC logo; the facia design with integrated in-car entertainment and unambiguous controls, clear and informative instrumentation and details on the door cases, seats and console. Add the use of new high quality materials and even closer attention to fit and finish and you have a high quality product.

On the outside, Terrain also adds the durable and rugged look of integrated 'skid' panels in front and rear bumpers and contrasting dark sill and wheel arch mouldings. Jewel-like headlights and taillights add to the overall good looks.

The Terrain comes with an impressive list of standard equipment. Twin front and curtain airbags are standard, even on the base SLE model along with head restraints and full three-point seatbelts. Side airbags are specified on the SLT models. All models are equipped with deadlocking and an alarm system.

Careful thought has been applied to what is a real need in an SUV as opposed to specification to impress. In typical GMC style, all instruments and operating controls are ergonomically placed and clearly laid out. Large, distinctive instruments and a center console with central info display give the cockpit a driver-oriented layout. Steering mounted audio controls are standard, as is power windows with express down. Ultrasonic rear and Front Park assist with rearview LED light bar and audible warning is standard on the SLT and available on the SLE. The SLT can also be specified with a sunroof.

The suspension is fully independent for excellent on-road performance and manoeuvring capabilities. It consists of a MacPherson strut configuration at the front and an independent four link set up at the rear. Ventilated disc brakes are standard on all four wheels. The Terrain's AWD system combines the benefits of pure front-wheel drive - such as low fuel consumption and virtually effortless manoeuvering with those of four-wheel drive.

Under normal conditions, the Terrain is a pure front-wheel drive car. However, propulsion power can be quickly and seamlessly distributed between the front and rear axle at a ratio of up to 50:50 when needed. The key element for this function is an electronically controlled, electro-hydraulic differential on the rear axle. The compact and light AWD system is fully integrated in the ABS and ESP and supports the driver effectively in all driving situations, including during heavy acceleration.

Caterham Seven Superlight R500

Caterham Seven Superlight R500
Caterham Press Release

2008 Caterham Seven Superlight R500The latest model from the British sportscar manufacturer takes the minimalist, lightweight Seven philosophy to a new level with more power, sharper handling and for those venturing on track the option of launch control and the Caterham Motorsport engineered sequential gearbox.

Weighing just 506 kg and producing 263 bhp, R500 is the most potent race-tuned production Seven yet.

The Series 3 chassis flagship model blasts out 520 bhp-per-tonne and is capable of propelling itself from 0-60 mph in 2.88 seconds, delivering a pure adrenalin fix for those committed enough to strap themselves into the Kevlar race seats.

The original R500 was legendary, with the old Rover K-series powered machine rewriting performance records for 0-60 mph and 0-100-0 mph times. This new variant has been equipped to supersede its predecessor by embracing the very latest in lightweight engineering techniques and technology.

2008 Caterham Seven Superlight R500Lurking under the lightened bonnet is the all-alloy 2.0 litre Ford Duratec engine. Fed by its roller barrel throttle bodies, the normally aspirated, four-cylinder mill is tuned by Caterham Powertrain (CPT) to unleash a monster; 263 bhp with a heaving 177 lb-ft of torque transmitted to the rear wheels. The relentless acceleration is transmitted through each ratio by either the standard 6-speed gearbox or the optional Caterham Motorsport engineered sequential transmission.

To help reign in such extreme performance are race-developed Avon CR500 tyres and a suspension set-up that includes weight saving aero wishbones and fully adjustable dampers. Bringing things ferociously to a halt are four-piston callipers clamping on vented discs at the front and lightweight twin piston rear callipers.

Performance upgrades for the R500 aimed squarely at the track day market include a sequential transmission, launch control, a gulping Carbon Induction Airbox and Eibach Springs and dampers derived from the Caterham C400 race series.

2008 Caterham Seven Superlight R500The R500 isn't just about big performance statistics though; refinements and Seven firsts feature throughout and help distinguish it from its stablemates.

In true Colin Chapman spirit, engineers sought to add lightness to the chassis in order to improve the overall performance.

To shed a massive 9 kg from the already featherlight chassis utilised by the R400, Caterham left no bolt unscrewed - more carbon and Kevlar feature than previously, thinner body panels have been utilised right through to aluminium rear light housings.

Discreet exterior styling tweaks carried over from the flagship CSR models offer both form and function - the carbon winglets increasing downforce and the cat's tongue grill aiding cooling and aerodynamics. A carbon leather boot cover and clear rear lights are also new.

Housed within the revised chassis is keyless ignition, a quick-release Momo steering wheel with integrated indicator switches and an innovative dashboard featuring flush fitted switchgear, ACES sequential gear change lights and a new Stack display with scrolling text. The carbon dash is also finished with a detailed engraved plaque to show each car's number.

On sale immediately (United Kingdom), the factory built Superlight R500 starts at £36,995.

Kia Koup Concept

2008 Kia Koup Concept
Kia Press Release

2008 Kia Koup ConceptCombining youthful exuberance with a sporty and sleek design, Kia Motors America (KMA) today globally debuted the KOUP concept at the 2008 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) during a press conference at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Illustrating the shape and evolution of future Kia vehicles, the simple yet bold and aggressive KOUP exterior is complemented by its realistic and sleek interior design. Originating from the Kia Motors America Design Center in Irvine, California, the KOUP concept embodies Kia's philosophy of "Exciting and Enabling" with its balanced proportions and fluid design set to evoke an emotional driving experience.

"The Kia KOUP concept represents the future of the Kia brand and its dynamic vehicles that speak to our core philosophies," said Tom Kearns, chief designer of KMA. "Kia strives to appeal to the emotional side of car enthusiasts who seek adventure and want to take a leap into the future with style and advanced technology, and the KOUP effectively delivers."

First glance
Curb appeal begins with the KOUP's balanced proportions and fluid design. From the tab-shaped and purposeful upper grille to the high-tech and pragmatic headlamps, the front fascia's form gives the vehicle a bold and aggressive stance.

2008 Kia Koup ConceptThe KOUP features an uncomplicated yet dynamic wedge shape along its sides stemming from its glowing, carbon fibre and black chrome enhanced LED lamp lenses.

While the KOUP's overall form is simple and precise, it makes a design statement with positive tension created by a "swoosh" that swoops from the C-Pillar forward, down to the A-Pillar and flares all the way back around to the rear deck lid. A trailing horizontal lip along the deck lid tapers up toward the outer ends to meet up with the swoosh from the beltline. The rocker sill has a distinctive "check mark" shape and prominent wheel flares that give the KOUP a strong, lowered stance. The short overhangs and wide stance reflect its well-balanced and responsive character.

No element of high-style design is missing in the KOUP concept as illustrated by its greenhouse-integrated, panoramic-view glass with two panels extending from the windshield through the roof to the backlight, appearing as two parallel pieces of glass - similar to a fighter jet cockpit. Segregating the glass panels, an interior mood light runs the full length of the greenhouse. To further the performance-inspired appearance with sporty elegance, carbon fibre enhancements accent the KOUP's chin spoiler, lamp lenses, cowl panel, side-view mirrors, rear bumper insert and rear diffuser, while flashy twin wheel spokes include carbon fibre inserts paired with an open design to show off the Brembo callipers’ and cross-drilled rotors.

2008 Kia Koup ConceptInside the cockpit
Conceived artfully and with graphic precision, the KOUP's interior hones in on the desires of auto enthusiasts from the inward lean of the dashboard and Supervision instrument panel, enhancing the performance-inspired driving experience to the custom-designed, race-inspired steering wheel in front of a three-gauge instrument cluster. Carbon fibre accents on the shifter plate and seat tilt-adjust mechanism reinforce sporty performance.

Audiophiles and car enthusiasts alike will take heed of eight speakers, including large rear deck speakers matched to a juke box audio system, further harmonising the driving experience. A built-in Bluetooth-enabled navigation system with Map On Demand (MOD) is just the beginning of the telematics services, including safe driving, car maintenance and life/assistance offerings.

The KOUP features a realistic interior design that integrates high-style materials, including rich and supple seat fabrics accentuated with concrete- and black-colour trims. As a true driver's car, the front seats contrast the rear seats with opposing colours and patterning and horizontal, padded silicone bars occupy the seat backs for extra comfort. High-tech details are integrated into the interior, including convenient smart key with push button start, and a six-speed automatic transmission with steering column-mounted paddle shifters.

Taking flight
Powered by a commanding 2.0-litre Theta II turbocharged engine producing 290 horsepower paired with a GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) twin scroll turbocharger for greater power and efficiency, the KOUP delivers astonishing torque of 289 lb-ft at a low 2,000 rpm sustained to 4,000 rpm. By injecting fuel directly into the cylinder under high pressure using the Kia GDI system, the intake charge is cooled and combustion behaviour is improved. Improved combustion assures excellent fuel economy and low emissions. Lower grille openings enable additional air intake for extra power.

Built on a front-wheel-drive unibody frame, coil springs and stabiliser bars complement an independent front suspension featuring MacPherson struts and an independent dual link rear suspension to provide the optimal balance of ride comfort and engine responsiveness. An engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system adds the finishing touch for precise handling. In keeping with the KOUP's sporty essence, Continuous Damping Control (CDC) for quick movements and sharp turns paired with a sport-tuned, four-wheel independent suspension and strut tower bar offer a tighter grip for more spirited driving.

Safety
The KOUP concept features all of the standard safety features offered in Kia's regular production vehicle lineup including six standard airbags and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Electronic Stability Control (ESC) paired with CDC stabilises the KOUP for maximum contact with the pavement. The large 245/40ZR19 tyres complete the KOUP's impressive package. Also included is adaptive front lighting and cruise control, adding to the KOUP's advanced safety technology.
